Timothy Hillier
Timothy Hillier’s practice explores the relationship between landscape, memory and perception, using the Australian environment as a space where the familiar becomes quietly uncanny. Working across documentary and fine art photography, he is drawn to places that exist on the edges of everyday experience—suburban streets, coastlines, remote communities and transitional landscapes.
Rather than seeking objective representation, he embraces light, atmosphere and optical imperfections as active elements within the image. Lens flare, reflections, motion and colour become metaphors for the instability of memory and the emotional experience of place. His work is influenced by cinema, painting and the history of photography, balancing observation with abstraction to create images that sit between reality and dream. Whether documenting cultural stories or pursuing personal projects, Hillier aims to produce photographs that invite contemplation, revealing the poetic potential of ordinary places and encouraging viewers to reconsider the landscapes they thought they knew. Tim Holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and he has exhibited his work widely in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Australia and overseas.
