Vivian Cooper Smith
Vivian Cooper Smith was born in Aotearoa/New Zealand and lived in Bangladesh and India before arriving in Naarm/Melbourne. Working across photography, drawing and collage, his practice explores how images are made and how photography shapes our experience and knowledge of the world. Through experimental, hands-on studio processes, he creates works that emerge through material exploration, repetition and reflection.
Recent exhibitions include Patterns of the Eclipse at Blockprojects, Melbourne (2024), The Garden of Time at La Storta, Venice (2024), and From Impulse to Action at Bundanon Art Museum (2022). In 2020, Vivian was one of two overall winners of the Contemporary Landscapes in Photography (CLIP) Award.
His work has been recognised through major awards and is held in public, corporate and private collections, including Artbank, Australian Catholic University, Museum of Australian Photography and Gippsland Art Gallery.
